The Trans’Ardèche is a multi-day, north-to-south MTB ride across the Ardèche Mountains – from the volcanic ridge of the Cévennes to the limestone plateaux of the Southern Ardèche. This land of contrast reveals its strong identity and authenticity as we explore its well-preserved, wide-open landscapes.
Emerging from the Eyrieux valley, enter the land of volcanic mountains where the range’s highest summit stands: Mont Mézenc. The high-altitude pastures serve as a reminder that these are working farmlands. A visit to the source of the Loire River at the foot of the famous Mont Gerbier de Jonc gives this cycling adventure an emblematic feel. We continue the crossing through the most remote and wild parts of the Ardèche Mountains Regional Nature Reserve. Hanging onto the steep-sided valleys, isolated, picturesque but sturdy hamlets hold strong against the sands of time.
Speeding along high above the valley floor, we ride along the ridgetops, enjoying clear views over the stunning landscapes stretching out far below us. Dropping down the cliffs of the Vivarais region on age-old paths, moorlands make way for chestnut groves and soon even olives. We reach the Gras plateau where the smells of the forest and the southern heathlands fill our nostrils. We enter the Ardèche River Gorges nature reserve for a sumptuous finale, culminating in the world-famous rock arch shaped by the forces of nature: the Pont d’Arc.
